FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

#1: What is Taekwon Do and how is it different from other martial arts?
The different martial arts all originated in different countries thousands of years ago as forms of self-defense. Karate comes from Japan; Kung Fu from China. Taekwon-Do is native to Korea. In terms of techniques, Taekwon- Do emphasizes kicks more than other martial arts, making it ideal for improving strength, flexibility, and endurance. It is also a powerful form of self-defense.

#2: Will it make children aggressive?
No! Children are taught from the first lesson that a "Taekwon-Do kid" never misuses their martial arts skills. Taekwon-Do students are expected to be humble, courteous, and careful about when and where they practice their skills. We continually educate children that Taekwon-Do is a form of exercise, self-improvement, self-defense and not a tool for bullying.

#3: How does Taekwon-Do improve a child's fitness?
Taekwon-Do is a fun way to get in shape. Stretching, calisthenics and games are woven throughout the class to keep children motivated. Over time children develop great core body strength, balance and flexibility (and hopefully a life long commitment to good health).

#4: What if I've never done it before or if I'm out of shape?
At Champlain Heights Taekwon-do we have ongoing enrollment, so beginners are always welcome. First time students receive plenty of one-on-one instruction designed to answer common questions and provide an introduction to the basics of Taekwon-Do. Students are encouraged to learn at a pace that is comfortable for them. After just a few short months students notice marked improvement in their strength, flexibility and overall health.

#5: What is the International Taekwon-Do Federation?
The ITF is the oldest Taekwon-Do Assocition in the world. Its home base is Vienna. There are 79 member countries represented in the ITF. As a member of the ITF you are assured of receiving internationally certified instruction and internationally recognized belt certificates. In addition, students have the opportunity to excel to the highest levels in martial arts as a competitor or even future Taekwon-Do Master.
